International Campaign for Tibet

The International Campaign for Tibet, ICT, is a non-profit advocacy organization that promotes human rights, democratic freedoms and self-determination for the Tibetan people. It was founded in 1988 and is one of the largest Tibet-focused advocacy groups in the world. ICT is based in Washington, D.C., with additional offices in Amsterdam, Brussels and Berlin.

ICT monitors and reports on human rights, environmental and socio-economic conditions inside Tibet, drawing on information from a network of researchers in India and Nepal. It advocates with governments for policies and assistance to help Tibetans, and organizes activities such as an annual lobby day for supporters to raise Tibet with their elected representatives. It also reaches out to Chinese individuals, organizations and media to build support for its work.

The organization supports negotiations between the Dalai Lama and the government of the People’s Republic of China. Through the Rowell Fund it gives small grants to Tibetans working on the environment, journalism, photography and women’s projects. It also presents the Light of Truth Award to people and institutions that have contributed to public understanding of Tibet and its human rights situation.
