Description

Whistleblowerprotection.eu is a platform initiative launched by Eurocadres, with signatories from trade unions and other civil society organisations across Europe.

The platform argues that whistleblowing can save lives, protect the environment and prevent the loss of public money, and that Europe needs EU-wide legislation to protect people who speak up. It explains who counts as a whistleblower, including workers, the self-employed, volunteers, contractors and job applicants, and highlights cases such as mass surveillance, tax avoidance and abuse of environmental rules that whistleblowers have exposed. It notes that corruption costs the EU an estimated 120 billion euros a year, a cost that stronger whistleblower protection could help reduce.

Through its platform statement, it calls on the European Commission, the European Council and the European Parliament to bring forward and support broad EU-wide legislation protecting whistleblowers, covering groups beyond employees and a wide range of activities. Organisations can join the platform as signatories. It has received support in part from a grant from the Open Society Initiative for Europe.
