Human Rights Commission of Salt Lake City

The Human Rights Commission of Salt Lake City is an advisory board that works with the city government on human rights issues in Salt Lake City, Utah.

It focuses on eliminating discrimination to enhance the general welfare of the city’s residents and the vitality of its diverse neighborhoods and businesses. It advises the city on checking and eliminating discriminatory practices based on age, ancestry, color, disability, gender, national origin, marital status, medical condition, physical limitation, race, religion or sexual orientation.

The commission was established by a city ordinance in October 2005, on the model of similar bodies elsewhere in the country. It serves as an advisory board to the city’s Office of Diversity and Human Rights, and its members are approved by the City Council to serve two or four year terms. It meets regularly every month and organizes subcommittees to deal with particular issues.

Each December, the commission hosts a celebration marking Human Rights Day on December 10th.
