Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation

Description

The Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation is a German human rights foundation working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people worldwide.

It was founded in Berlin in summer 2007 on the initiative of the Lesbian and Gay Federation in Germany, now LSVD+. It is named after Magnus Hirschfeld, a German pioneer of the homosexual civil rights movement, and Fannyann Eddy, a lesbian human rights activist from Sierra Leone. The foundation is led by a board and a foundation council, while administration is carried out by the LSVD federal association.

The foundation supports threatened lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people through international networking and cooperation with partner organizations in the global South and in Eastern Europe. It works on human rights advocacy at national and international level through education, awareness raising and building alliances. It also lobbies officials in foreign policy, development cooperation and human rights policy, strengthens the work of human rights defenders, and promotes campaigns against homophobia and criminal prosecution.

It published a German edition of the Yogyakarta Principles as the first volume in its publication series, setting out the programmatic basis of its work. The foundation holds that lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex rights are human rights, universal and indivisible across every continent. It has offices in Cologne and Berlin.
