GONG

Description

GONG is a nonpartisan citizens’ association in Croatia, founded in 1997 to encourage citizens to take a more active part in political life. It works on democracy, elections, transparency, anti-corruption and media literacy. It is based in Zagreb.

GONG monitors elections and electoral law, and has asked the Constitutional Court to review election rules it considers unfair to voters. It pushes for reforms so that citizens, not just political parties, stay at the centre of electoral change. It also studies public trust in elections and voter turnout.

The organization tracks government transparency, lobbying rules and conflicts of interest, and comments on the rule of law in Croatia and the European Union. It built Parlametar, a tool that tracks voting records and speeches in the Croatian parliament. It also runs ImamoPravoZnati.org, a platform that helps citizens request information from publicly funded bodies and publishes the requests online.

With Code for Croatia, GONG built Popravi.to, a free tool for reporting problems with public infrastructure anywhere in Croatia. It trains teachers and runs schools for local activists on political, media and EU literacy, and holds a quality mark for its teacher training programme since 2012. It also studies media habits and civic education in Croatia.
