Global Rights

Description

Global Rights is an international human rights organization that works to advance justice, equality and human rights for marginalized communities, mainly across Africa.

It was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1978 as the International Human Rights Law Group and took the name Global Rights in 2003. In 2014 it closed its Washington headquarters and shifted its operations to its country offices in Nigeria and Burundi, from where it continues to work with local partners.

For over four decades it has supported underserved communities in more than 20 countries, building the capacity of community-based organizations, training people on their rights, documenting human rights violations, and facilitating dialogue between stakeholders. Its thematic work covers business and human rights, civic space, equitable resource governance, women’s rights and gender equality, and access to remedies for victims of abuse.

Global Rights helped create regional cooperation initiatives such as the African Coalition for Corporate Accountability and the Legislative Advocacy Coalition on Violence Against Women, and runs the Rape Is A Crime initiative on gender-based violence. It has expanded its presence into Ghana and is working to extend its reach into Cameroon.
