Free Tibet

Description

Free Tibet is a non-governmental organization that campaigns for Tibetan human rights and self-determination. It was founded in 1987 and is based in London, England.

Free Tibet works to end China’s occupation of Tibet and to secure international recognition of Tibetans’ right to freedom. It monitors and publicizes human rights abuses inside Tibet, including surveillance, censorship and the treatment of political prisoners, and campaigns for their release. It is a member of the International Tibet Network, a worldwide group of organizations campaigning for Tibet.

The organization runs public campaigns, petitions and protests aimed at governments, companies and international bodies such as the United Nations and the Olympic movement. Past campaigns have targeted torture in Tibetan prisons, the demolition of the Larung Gar Buddhist Academy, Confucius Institutes overseas, and the treatment of Tibetan musicians and other political prisoners. It works with partner organizations such as Tibet Watch and Students for a Free Tibet to document abuses and mobilize international pressure.
