Frankfurt Zoological Society

Description

The Frankfurt Zoological Society is an international conservation organization that works to maintain biodiversity and protect wildlife and ecosystems in wild places around the world.

It leads and supports around 26 conservation projects in 18 countries, covering large grasslands, forests, wetlands and mountains. It provides logistical support to protected areas, sponsors animal census surveys, gives conservation education and advises organizations that establish conservation areas. It also takes part in programmes to protect and reintroduce endangered species, acquires land for conservation, and helps restore natural landscapes. Projects run in Africa, Asia, South America, Kazakhstan and Germany, carried out together with local organizations and authorities.

The society was founded in 1858 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, originally to establish the city’s zoo. Since the 1950s its focus shifted increasingly toward conserving endangered animals and their habitats worldwide. It is a registered non-profit association with several thousand members in Germany and abroad, and it finances its work through third-party funds, donations and income from a foundation it established.
