Environmental Organizations United States

Description

Environment California is an environmental advocacy organization that works to protect the natural world in the state of California.

It advocates for clean air, clean water, clean energy, wildlife, open spaces and action on climate change. Its work includes research, public education, advocacy and litigation. It builds coalitions of business owners, farmers, doctors, nurses, religious leaders and other citizens, and its members and canvassers support its campaigns across the state.

The organization is part of a network of state environmental groups affiliated with Environment America and the Public Interest Network. It was formed in 2003 by the California Public Interest Research Group to take over that group’s environmental work. It employs researchers, advocates, attorneys and organizers who plan and carry out its campaigns.

Environment California works with members of Congress and pursues legal action to enforce environmental law, including cases under the federal Clean Water Act. Its approach favors a strategic, step by step path toward measurable improvements in environmental quality, alongside public education meant to build broad support for its campaigns.
