Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights is an independent human rights organization based in Cairo, Egypt.

It was founded in 2002. It works to promote and protect basic rights and freedoms in Egypt.

It focuses on civil liberties, economic and social justice, criminal justice, and regional and international human rights mechanisms. Its work centers on rights tied to a person’s body, privacy and home. It aims to complement the work of other Egyptian human rights groups.

The organization works through research, documentation, legal aid, strategic litigation and advocacy. It set up the North African Litigation Initiative in 2010 to help NGOs and human rights defenders across North Africa use the African human rights system. That initiative gives technical and financial support to groups seeking to litigate before bodies such as the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, pressing North African governments to protect the rights set out in the African Charter.
