Child Welfare League of Canada

Description

The Child Welfare League of Canada is a national, membership-based charitable organization that promotes the safety and well-being of young people and their families.

It focuses especially on children and families who are marginalized or systemically oppressed. It was incorporated in 1994 in Ottawa, growing out of Canadian members of the Child Welfare League of America who sought a stronger national presence. Its members include provincial and territorial ministries of child and family services, child and family service agencies, Indigenous organizations, health and social services, and government departments.

Its work includes publishing reports and annual publications on child welfare issues such as foster care and supports for youth aging out of care. It runs a Learning Community on Reconciliation, bringing together organizations from across Canada to work respectfully with First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and to advance the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. It has also supported anti-spanking and anti-poverty campaigns and advocated for youth in care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Services, publications and information are provided in both of Canada’s official languages, and membership is open to organizations and individuals of all cultures, ethnic origins and social classes.
