Environmental Organizations United States

Description

Dogwood Alliance is an environmental nonprofit that works to protect the forests of the southern United States from industrial logging.

It advances environmental justice and climate action by mobilizing communities to defend Southern forests, arguing that standing natural forests are one of the best defenses against climate change. It campaigns against burning whole trees for wood pellet biomass energy through its Our Forests Aren’t Fuel work, and pushes companies to source paper more responsibly rather than from endangered forests. It has pressed major corporations, including International Paper, Staples, Office Depot and KFC, to change how they manage or source from forests.

The group also partners with frontline communities in the US South, many of them Black, Indigenous or otherwise historically underserved, to develop economic solutions that do not depend on forest destruction. Its work includes wetland forest conservation projects and forest carbon credit initiatives. Dogwood Alliance has been active for over 25 years and is based in Asheville, North Carolina.
