Description

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Informationsfreiheit e.V., known as DGIF, is a German nonprofit association that has existed since 2006. It describes itself as a politically and economically independent organization.

Its stated goals are to enable and strengthen political participation, to foster acceptance of democracy, to improve oversight of public administration, and to help prevent corruption. It pursues these goals through the promotion of freedom of information in Germany. To reach them, the association funds academic research and teaching on freedom of information, takes part in public debates on the subject, and promotes exchange of opinion and experience about how information-freedom law works in practice.

It works to develop and improve information freedom within administrative and legal practice. It supports education and further training on the topic, and organizes conferences, discussions and other educational events, including events with a broader civic and political dimension. It maintains dialogue with people responsible in politics, administration, science and business.

It issues position papers and expert opinions for its members and the public on scientific, political, legal and practical aspects of information freedom, and cooperates with other organizations that share its aim. DGIF is based in Birkenwerder and is registered with the Amtsgericht Charlottenburg in Berlin. It has been recognized as a nonprofit body by the Finanzamt Oranienburg since 2017.

It is led by a board and invites supporters to become members or to donate.
