Committee on the Administration of Justice

The Committee on the Administration of Justice, CAJ, is an independent human rights organisation in Northern Ireland. It has cross-community membership and was founded in 1981. CAJ campaigns on a broad range of domestic and international human rights issues, and works to secure the highest standards in the administration of justice by holding the government to the rule of law and to its obligations under international human rights law.

CAJ produces authoritative analysis on human rights issues and advocates for reforms to the criminal justice system and to human rights legislation. It played a role in Northern Ireland’s peace process, which began with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement and aims to build a rights-based society. It continues to press for a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland and for a way to deal with unresolved abuses from the conflict.

CAJ is a membership organisation open to individuals and is funded by private charities and individual donors. It is an affiliate member of the International Federation of Human Rights, alongside Liberty in Britain and human rights groups in the Republic of Ireland. It has published research and made consultation submissions on human rights issues since 1981.
