Coastal Prairie Conservancy
Description
The Coastal Prairie Conservancy is a nonprofit land trust working to conserve coastal prairie in Texas for people and wildlife.
It protects and restores prairie grasslands, wetlands, farms and ranches, aiming to safeguard water quality, reduce flooding and support diverse wildlife. It works to increase the amount of protected coastal prairie land, restore and enhance conserved land, and connect the public with nature through access, education and outreach programs. It manages a network of preserves, including working farms and ranches kept under conservation easements.
The organization was formed in 1992 as the Katy Prairie Conservancy to conserve the Katy Prairie, part of the Western Gulf coastal grasslands, before it disappeared amid rapid growth in the Greater Houston region. It has since expanded its work into additional watersheds south of the Katy Prairie. It is one of the largest local land conservation organizations by acreage in Southeast Texas, protecting over 36,600 acres of coastal prairie.
The Coastal Prairie Conservancy is based in Houston, Texas, and maintains a field office in Waller, Texas.
