Description

CIWEM, the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, is a royal chartered professional body and independent charity working for the sustainable management of the environment worldwide.

It represents thousands of members and organisations in over 89 countries who work in water and environmental management. It traces its history back to 1895, when one of its founding bodies, the Institution of Public Health Engineers, was formed. The present institution was created in 1987 through the merger of that body with the Institution of Water Engineers and Scientists and the Institute of Water Pollution Control, and it was granted a Royal Charter in 1995.

CIWEM champions professional standards, impartiality and scientific evidence in environmental management, and is licensed to award Chartered Scientist and Chartered Environmentalist status to qualifying members. It runs local branches and special interest groups and networks covering topics such as water resources, flooding, waste, energy and climate change, giving members a forum for professional debate. It also presents awards including the Environmental Photographer of the Year and the Young Environmentalist of the Year.
