Environmental Organizations Czechia

Description

Hnutí Brontosaurus, the Brontosaurus Movement, is a nature conservation and youth organization in the Czech Republic. It was founded in 1974, making it the first environmental organization of its kind in Czechoslovakia. The name refers to the extinct dinosaur, chosen as a reminder of what happens when a species dies out.

The movement focuses on children and young people, organizing weekend trips, summer camps, environmental education tours and courses, and ecological consultations. It also runs programs on volunteering, heritage protection, and support for local branches and regional centres across the country. After 1989 it became an independent organization focused on free-time activities and education, structured into local groups spread across the Czech Republic.

Hnutí Brontosaurus is run from a central office in Brno with local branches, clubs and regional centres elsewhere in the country. Its activities include the Akce příroda and Akce památky programs, a children’s holiday camp section, a volunteer centre, and international cooperation projects.
