Ceres
Description
Ceres is a nonprofit sustainability advocacy organization based in Boston, Massachusetts, that works to accelerate a cleaner, more just and resilient economy.
It makes the business case for action on climate change, water scarcity and pollution, and nature and biodiversity loss. Through data-driven research and analysis, Ceres pushes investors and companies to set climate and sustainability goals, and it engages policymakers and regulators to advance market-based policies. It runs initiatives on sectors such as banking, electric power, food and agriculture, oil and gas, steel and transportation, and coordinates investor networks that press large corporations to address climate and water risk.
Ceres was founded in 1989, in the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, by investors and environmentalists led by Joan Bavaria. It created the Ceres Principles, an early corporate code of environmental conduct, and later helped launch the Global Reporting Initiative and the Investor Network on Climate Risk. It also co-hosts investor summits on climate risk at the United Nations and, since 2019, has run the Ceres Accelerator for Sustainable Capital Markets.
