Description

The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation, known as CHRR, is a human rights non-governmental organization in Malawi.

It was founded in February 1995 by former student exiles who returned home when Malawi introduced multiparty democracy in 1994. It is registered as a non-profit, apolitical, voluntary organization under Malawi’s Trustees Incorporation Act of 1962. It works across the Southern, Central and Northern Regions of the country.

CHRR’s mission is to promote good governance and human rights by empowering rural and urban communities to know and exercise their rights through research, education, advocacy and networking. It carries out civic and voter education, community safety awareness, human rights training for professionals, research on human rights and governance issues, and advocacy and lobbying for legal and policy reform. It also produces publications and newsletters and runs a paralegal clinic.

The organization networks with local bodies such as the Human Rights Consultative Committee and international bodies including the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and Amnesty International.
