Center for Food Safety
Description
Center for Food Safety is a nonprofit advocacy organization that works to protect the public and the environment from the impacts of industrial agriculture.
Founded in 1997, it is based in Washington, D.C., with offices in San Francisco, California, and Portland, Oregon. Its mission is to empower people, support farmers and protect the earth from industrial agriculture, using legal, scientific and grassroots strategies. For more than 25 years it has worked to curb the use of toxic pesticides and genetically modified organisms in agriculture and to promote organic, ecological and just farming.
The organization has brought high-profile lawsuits against agrochemical companies to protect public health and endangered species from pesticides such as glyphosate, dicamba and neonicotinoids. It has fought the introduction of several genetically modified crops, including alfalfa, sugar beets, wheat, rice and other food crops, and has pushed for GMO labeling. It has also worked to keep large stretches of U.S. ocean waters free of industrial fish farms and has petitioned federal agencies to protect endangered species such as the Iowa Skipper Butterfly.
