Environmental Organizations United States

Description

The Center for Biological Diversity is a nonprofit membership organization working to protect endangered species and their habitats.

Founded in 1989 in Tucson, Arizona, it grew out of a small group focused on saving imperiled species and habitat in the American Southwest region. It is based in Tucson with offices across the United States, including New Mexico, Nevada, California, Oregon, Alaska, Florida and Washington, D.C. Its mission is to secure a future for species through science, law and creative media, focusing on protecting the lands, waters and climate species need to survive.

The organization uses litigation, scientific petitions, and grassroots and media campaigns to press for endangered species protections. It employs attorneys, scientists and campaigners working on carnivores, oceans, public lands, energy policy, environmental health and population issues. It also publishes The Revelator, an online publication on environmental topics, and produces reports such as its annual list highlighting biodiversity work.
