Burma Campaign UK
Description
Burma Campaign UK is a London-based nonprofit that campaigns for human rights, democracy and development in Burma, also known as Myanmar. It was founded in 1991. It is one of the leading organizations in the world dedicated to this cause and coordinates an international campaign for human rights in Burma.
The group works closely with activists inside Burma and in exile, making sure their voices and demands reach international decision-makers. It lobbies governments, the European Union and the United Nations to press for sanctions and other action against Burma’s military. It has helped secure sanctions on military-linked companies and persuaded many companies to stop doing business with the regime.
Burma Campaign UK documents and exposes human rights abuses that the military tries to keep hidden, and has helped ensure humanitarian aid reaches villagers displaced by military attacks. It builds worldwide media coverage to keep international attention on Burma. It relies entirely on public donations and receives no government funding.
