Botanic Gardens Conservation International

Description

Botanic Gardens Conservation International, known as BGCI, is a plant conservation charity and membership organization for botanic gardens.

It represents botanic gardens in more than 100 countries, forming what it describes as the world’s largest plant conservation network. Members include the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. It was founded in 1987 and is based in Kew, Surrey, England.

BGCI supports and promotes the work of its member gardens and runs plant conservation and environmental education programmes worldwide, with major projects in China, North America, the Middle East and Russia. It maintains searchable databases of the world’s botanic gardens and their plant collections, and has published global assessments of threatened tree species, including a State of the World’s Trees report compiled with more than sixty institutional partners.

BGCI operates through a global office in the UK and regional offices covering the United States, Africa, China and South East Asia.
