BirdLife International

Description

BirdLife International is a global partnership of non-governmental organizations that works to conserve birds and their habitats.

It is made up of about 125 national conservation organizations across the world, organized around four pillars: species, sites, society and systems. It carries out conservation work rooted in regional knowledge, in partnership with Indigenous peoples and local communities. It has identified thousands of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas worldwide and serves as the official Red List authority for birds for the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

BirdLife International traces its origin to 1922, when it was founded as the International Council for Bird Protection. It took its current name in 1993. It runs conservation programmes across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Central Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific, working on issues such as preventing species extinction, protecting key habitats, marine conservation and flyway protection.

The organization also publishes a quarterly magazine and an academic journal, Bird Conservation International, together with Cambridge University Press. It maintains regional offices in the UK, Kenya, Senegal, Ecuador, Jordan, Belgium, Fiji, Japan and Singapore, reflecting its global reach.
