Anti-Slavery International

Description

Anti-Slavery International is a human rights organisation that works to eliminate all forms of slavery and slavery-like practices worldwide.

It was founded in 1839 as the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, making it the oldest international human rights organisation in the world. It is based in the United Kingdom and works closely with partner organisations around the world. It has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and observer status at the International Labour Organization.

The organisation focuses on the root causes of slavery rather than quick fixes, and campaigns on issues such as forced labour, bonded labour, human trafficking, child labour and forced marriage. It lobbies governments and international bodies for stronger laws and enforcement, and has pressed businesses and governments over forced labour in supply chains. It also researches conditions on the ground with local partner organisations and has helped bring legal cases on behalf of people subjected to slavery.

It is a non-religious, non-political and independent organisation. Anti-Slavery International also runs an annual award recognising campaigning against slavery by organisations and individuals in the countries most affected.
