ADIVIMA

Description

ADIVIMA, the Asociación para el Desarrollo Integral de las Víctimas de la Violencia en las Verapaces, Maya Achí, is a non-profit, community-based human rights organization in Guatemala. Survivors of the genocide and grave human rights violations of the internal armed conflict founded it on April 24, 1994. It is based in Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, and works with communities in the Verapaces region and part of El Quiché that were hit hardest by the violence.

The organization focuses on rebuilding the social fabric torn by the conflict, seeking access to justice, and restoring dignity to victims. It trains young people to recover historical memory and cultural identity. Its work spans three areas: human rights, socioeconomic development, and community organization, including workshops that train local leaders to assert their rights and engage with government.

ADIVIMA helped drive the exhumation of mass graves from the Rio Negro massacre and the prosecution of those responsible. It is a member of COCAHICH, a coalition of Maya Achí communities pursuing reparations for the harm caused by the Chixoy Dam’s construction. Through legal, cultural and educational programs, it continues to work for justice and remembrance for communities affected by Guatemala’s internal conflict.
