The Tree Register

Description

The Tree Register is a charity that keeps a database of notable trees across Britain and Ireland.

Its full name is The Tree Register of the British Isles, often shortened to TROBI. It covers Britain, Ireland, the Channel Isles and the Isle of Man, and its database records over 270,000 notable trees, including champion trees that are the tallest or have the largest trunk girth of their type. The charity has no paid staff and is run entirely by volunteers, with membership fees funding the website and the work of curating and updating the register.

It was established in 1988 by co-founders Vicky Hallett, later Vicky Schilling, and dendrologist Alan Mitchell. Its records combine the founders’ original hand-written data with historical measurements going back more than 200 years, allowing comparison of tree growth over time. It was one of the founders of the Ancient Tree Hunt campaign, and it set up the Vicky Schilling Bursary Award to support volunteer tree recorders.
