Description

Snow Leopard Conservancy India Trust is a non-profit conservation organization protecting snow leopards, their prey and their habitat in Ladakh, India.

It was formed in 2000 as the Indian branch of the Snow Leopard Conservancy and became an independent organization in 2003. It focuses on community-based conservation, working with people who share resources with snow leopards and other mountain wildlife. Its research covers population monitoring, camera trapping, ecological research and habitat assessment.

Its Himalayan Homestays program, started in 2002, has trained over 130 families across Ladakh and Zanskar to offer village-based homestays that support both local livelihoods and wildlife conservation. Other conservation work includes conflict mitigation, ecotourism, garbage management and livestock immunization. It also produces environmental education materials, such as the Ri Gyancha biodiversity resource kit for Ladakh, and provides training for teachers, students and nature guides.
