Peace Brigades International
Description
Peace Brigades International, PBI, is a non-governmental organization that protects human rights defenders and promotes non-violent transformation of conflicts.
It sends international volunteers to accompany local human rights defenders, unions, peasant groups and others threatened by political violence in areas of repression and conflict. Its work combines protective accompaniment on the ground with international observation, advocacy, awareness raising and capacity development. PBI does not interfere in the internal affairs of the people it accompanies and works only where local defenders have requested support.
The organization is non-hierarchical and makes decisions by consensus, through field projects, country groups and an international office. Founded in 1981, it has worked in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Sri Lanka, North America, Haiti, Nepal and the Balkans, and currently runs field projects in Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico and Nepal.
