Coalition for the International Criminal Court

Description

The Coalition for the International Criminal Court, CICC, is a global partnership of civil society organizations advancing international justice for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Its members advocate for all states to join the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, push for stronger national laws that deliver justice to victims, and press states to cooperate with and support the Court. The Coalition works to keep the ICC fair, effective and independent, and to make justice visible to affected communities. A Secretariat coordinates advocacy, communications and network activities among member organizations worldwide, while a Steering Committee of core member organizations gives the Coalition policy and program coherence.

The Coalition does not take positions on specific ICC investigations, cases or judicial candidates. Instead it works on core principles agreed among its membership, serving as a platform where civil society voices are heard and coordinated. It maintains regional and national networks of NGOs, lawyers, academics and bar associations that campaign locally for ratification and implementation of the Rome Statute.

The Coalition was founded in 1995 by a small group of human rights organizations campaigning for a permanent international criminal court. It now brings together civil society groups from around 150 countries, with a membership of more than 2500 organizations covering human rights, victims’ issues, women’s and children’s rights, and peace and legal expertise.
