CARE International

Description

CARE International is a humanitarian organization that works to fight global poverty and deliver emergency relief and long-term development.

It was founded in 1945 and has grown into a confederation of national member organizations, each an autonomous non-profit registered in its own country. Its international secretariat is based in Geneva, Switzerland, with further offices in Brussels, London and New York. In 2022 it worked in over 111 countries, reaching 174 million people through nearly 1,631 projects.

CARE runs programs covering emergency response, food security, water and sanitation, economic development, climate change, agriculture, education and health. It also advocates at local, national and international level for policy change and the rights of poor people. Across all of this work it places a particular focus on women and girls, on the view that supporting them helps lift whole families and communities out of poverty.

The confederation is overseen by shared governance and leadership bodies under a common code, and it commits to transparent reporting on how it meets international standards of quality and accountability toward its partners, staff and the communities it works with.
