Burung Indonesia

Description

Burung Indonesia is an Indonesian association working to conserve wild birds and their habitats.

It was founded on 15 July 2002 and is the sole Indonesian partner in the global BirdLife International partnership, which covers over a hundred organizations worldwide. It is based in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. In its first years it worked in Sumba, Flores, Tanimbar, Halmahera and Sangihe-Talaud, later expanding to Gorontalo, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara and the Maluku Islands.

Its conservation programs identify priority sites called Important Bird Areas, run baseline surveys, and monitor bird populations, habitats and threats. It works with local communities, government institutions and the private sector, including through site support groups, to protect species and manage conservation areas. It helped establish the Hutan Harapan ecosystem restoration program to save Sumatra’s remaining lowland forest and contributed to founding national parks such as Aketajawe-Lolobata.

Burung Indonesia also runs a knowledge center that gathers and shares information on Indonesian bird species, and engages the public through awareness campaigns such as the Asian Waterbird Census. It works against the illegal capture and trade of birds.
