Description

The Australian Human Rights Commission is a national statutory body that promotes and protects human rights in Australia.

It helps people resolve complaints about discrimination and human rights breaches, and runs a national information service for enquiries. It reviews existing and proposed laws, policies and practices, and advises government, businesses and community groups on protecting human rights. It publishes reports on human rights problems and how to address them.

The Commission delivers workplace and community human rights education and training, and promotes public understanding and discussion of human rights. It also acts as the regulator for the positive duty requiring employers to address workplace sexual harassment, sex discrimination and related conduct.

The Commission is a legal entity constituted by the President and the Commissioners, who meet regularly to make decisions. It operates a Governance Handbook, an annual business risk assessment, a Fraud Control Plan and an audit committee to oversee its work. It operates across Australia.
