Amazon Watch

Description

Amazon Watch is a nonprofit organization that works to protect the rainforest and the rights of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin.

It was founded in 1996 and is based in Oakland, California, with a further office in Washington, DC. It partners with Indigenous and environmental organizations in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Brazil. Its campaigns cover human rights, corporate accountability and the preservation of the Amazon’s ecological systems.

The organization runs advocacy campaigns against oil extraction, mining and large infrastructure projects in the Amazon, and supports Indigenous land rights. It has pressed for corporate accountability from oil companies over pollution in the rainforest and has supported affected communities in legal disputes. It also documents and publicizes the impact of dams and other industrial projects on Indigenous and local populations.

Amazon Watch works alongside Indigenous-led movements and a network of Brazilian and international partner organizations. It produces reports and public campaigns aimed at ending oil extraction and other extractive industries in the Amazon, securing Indigenous land rights, and stopping environmental crime in the region.
